I started a new short-story tonight. Assuming I can refrain from making it top-heavy, it might even be a good one.

Excerpt:

By now the entire top portion of the woman's skull had been lifted away, prized apart like a grisly clamshell. The ropy black thing I thought I had glimpsed now basked in the dining room's muted sunlight, extending delicate hinged limbs that sprouted tiny silver instruments. In the space of ten seconds, the woman's exposed cranium had become a riot of metal and flesh and occasional jets of aerosolized blood. Eyes calm, she began eating her meal.

Heavy stuff. Shows great promise. Reminds me of Les Fleurs du Mal or The Chants of Maldoror.

ick, but engrossing.

I should probably debut the story here when it's finished. Or portions of it, anyway -- that way I could still attempt to sell it to some zine without technically having "published" it elsewhere. They're picky about that, and I can't say I blame them...

The excerpt seems to echo a scene in the second Hannibal Lector movie. Whether consciously or as literary parallel evolution, it might be taken as imitation.

Carol,

I didn't think of that, but I'm not worried. In context, there's nothing at all similar going on.

(I haven't seen the movie but have, of course, heard of the "brain scene.")

It won't work in reality, that's exactly what I consider.
