I thought there was something decidedly moody and existential about these chess players at Starbucks. I think Edward Hopper would have agreed.

This picture is encouraging for a couple of reasons.

Over the years I've heard dark tales of chess players being evicted from restaurants and diners, out of fear that any sort of games could lead to open gambling. Evidently this is not the case, not universally anyway.

Also: public chess playing! In Kansas City! I've been hanging out in the wrong places.
