Jupiter's got a new red spot

Backyard astronomers, grab your telescopes. Jupiter is growing a new red spot. Christopher Go of the Philippines photographed it on February 27th using an 11-inch telescope and a CCD camera.

The official name of this storm is "Oval BA," but "Red Jr." might be better. It's about half the size of the famous Great Red Spot and almost exactly the same color.

This is how it starts: an innocuous-seeming bit of astronomical weirdness.

People look on in wonder, quietly speculating before returning to more mundane affairs. Little do they know that aliens from the far reaches of the galaxy are using Jupiter to open a wormhole into our neck of the biocosm; soon their ships will emerge and start taking apart entire moons right before our eyes.

And as we watch, horrified and awe-stricken, we wonder: "Are we next?"
